Creatine (methyl-guanidine acetate) was first isolated from meat in 1832 by French chemist and philosopher Michele Eugene Chevreul. He named his discovery creatine, referring to the Greek word kreas, meaning meat.

Approximately 60-70% of the creatine in our bodies exists in the form of free creatine, while the remainder is present in a phosphated form .
