Yeast

Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast often sold in the form of flakes or powder and is used by Vegans and vegetarians as a seasoning. It has a nutty, cheesy flavour so is often used as a cheese replacement in vegan recipes. It is a significant source of B vitamins and in some cases nutritional yeast is fortified with vitamin B12.

Yeast extract is different to nutritional yeast. Yeast extracts are made by extracting the cell contents. Marmite and Vegemite are examples of yeast extracts and are used as flavour enhancers in foods and sauces. Yeast extracts are also good sources of B group vitamins including vitamin B12.
