Phytoestrogens are plant derived ‘dietary oestrogens’. They are naturally occurring non-steroidal compounds that because of their structure, can have estrogenic effects if they interact with estrogen receptors in the body.
There is currently research into whether phytoestrogens can have an effect on the regulation of cholesterol levels and maintenance of proper bone density post-menopause. Phytoestrogens may also have some preventative effects against some cancers, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.
Phytoestrogens can be found in soya, barley, flax, carrots, apples, and a variety of other foods.
