Cabbage Akki Rotti


These rottis would be a great side for out Red Lentil, Potato and Baobab curry, the recipe can be found here.

  • 3 cups rice flour
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 medium cabbage, finely shredded
  • 1 large carrot, peeled and grated
  • 1-3 green chili peppers, finely chopped
  • salt to taste
  • oil for cooking
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 2 sprigs curry leaves, chopped
  • 2 tbsp oil

In a pan heat the oil then add the mustard seeds.

When the mustard seeds start to pop add the cumin. 

Once the cumin starts to brown add the chili and curry leaves and cook for half a minute.

Add the chopped onions and cook for a couple of minutes until they go translucent. 

Mix in the cabbage and carrots and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Add the rice flour and mix until it makes a dough.

Heat up a second pan.

Take tennis ball sized pieces of the dough and flatten them out in the hot pan to roughly 1/2 cm thick.

Add in a little oil around the edge and leave to cook for 2-3 minutes before turning over and cooking on the other side for 2-3 minutes.

Serve with chutneys or curry.
